History Highlights

1649 - William Chesebrough became the first settler of Stonington.

1657 - March 22 the earliest religious service held at Walter Palmer's house.

1661 - First meeting house built on Montauk Avenue.

1672 - New meeting house built on Agreement Hill, a spot slightly southwest of the present building.

1674 - June 3, the First Congregrational Church of Stonington (Road Church) was officially established with nine members - Rev. James Noyes, Thomas Stanton, Sr. and Jr., Nathaniel Chesebrough, Thomas Miner, and his son Ephraim, the brothers Nehemiah and Moses Palmer, and Thomas Wheeler. In September Mr. Noyes was ordained minister of the Gospel.

1690 - A small house with fireplace where the Rev. Mr. Noyes might warm himself between morning and afternoon meetings was built.

1717 - The edifice had become too small for the inhabitants.

1730 - By this time two meeting-houses had been built - one on Agreement Hill and one at Putnam's Corners, now the corner of Pequot Trail and Farmholme Road.

1765 - The two societies were reunited on Agreement Hill.
